6:8 But ¹  he knew ²  their thoughts, ³  and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Get up and stand here.” ⁴  So ⁵  he rose and stood there.

Lukas 15:32

15:32 It was appropriate ⁶  to celebrate and be glad, for your brother ⁷  was dead, and is alive; he was lost and is found.’” ⁸

17:2 It would be better for him to have a millstone ⁹  tied around his neck and be thrown into the sea ¹⁰  than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. ¹¹ 

[6:8]  ¹ tn Here the conjunction δέ (de) has been translated as contrastive.

[6:8]  ² sn The statement that Jesus knew their thoughts adds a prophetic note to his response; see Luke 5:22.

[6:8]  ³ tn Grk “their reasonings.” The implication is that Jesus knew his opponents’ plans and motives, so the translation “thoughts” was used here.

[6:8]  ⁴ sn Most likely synagogues were arranged with benches along the walls and open space in the center for seating on the floor.

[6:8]  ⁵ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the man’s action was a result of Jesus’ order.

[15:32]  ⁶ tn Or “necessary.”

[15:32]  ⁷ sn By referring to him as your brother, the father reminded the older brother that the younger brother was part of the family.

[15:32]  ⁸ sn The theme he was lost and is found is repeated from v. 24. The conclusion is open-ended. The reader is left to ponder with the older son (who pictures the scribes and Pharisees) what the response will be. The parable does not reveal the ultimate response of the older brother. Jesus argued that sinners should be pursued and received back warmly when they returned.

[17:2]  ⁹ tn This term refers to the heavy upper stone of a grinding mill (L&N 7.70; BDAG 660 s.v. μυλικός).

[17:2]  sn The punishment of drowning with a heavy weight attached is extremely gruesome and reflects Jesus’ views concerning those who cause others who believe in him to sin.

[17:2]  ¹⁰ tn Grk “if a millstone were tied…and he were thrown.” The conditional construction in Greek has been translated by English infinitives: “to have… and be thrown.”

[17:2]  ¹¹ tn Or “to stumble.” This verb, σκανδαλίσῃ (skandalish), has the same root as the noun σκάνδαλον (skandalon) in 17:1, translated “stumbling blocks”; this wordplay is difficult to reproduce in English. It is possible that the primary cause of offense here would be leading disciples (“little ones”) astray in a similar fashion.
